Grand designs for everyone: Government is hiring Technical Architects

Louise Ryan, Technical Architect at GDS

For the first time, the Government Digital Service is joining forces with a number of departments to hire Technical Architects.

There is an unprecedented number of transformational projects across the UK; these involve designing new cross-cutting services or completely re-imagining some of the existing services on a large scale.

2018 is a window of opportunity to take bigger responsibilities in tackling some of the biggest technical architecture challenges at the centre of government; and also to play a pivotal role in shaping society during a period of significant change.

Learn about the jobs, departments and locations available.

Influence, challenge, change

We’re looking for individuals able to solve complex large-scale problems and translate them into impressively simple, accessible services, providing fair and equal access for all citizens to government. We’ve included some quotes from our technical architects across government to give you an idea of what they enjoy most about their roles.

Breandán Knowlton says: “Technical Architects in government make decisions about systems that are used every day by tens of millions of people. They are some of the most performant and scaled systems in the world, attached to some of the most recognised government brands - for instance, GOV.UK.

Coming to government to solve one of those big challenges is a significant experience and investment for the future. You will have worked with a lot of autonomy on very well known systems that everyone uses and will use as a point of reference”.

Our work environment

Technical Architects in government can exchange with an excellent community of technologists, while also collaborating in a multidisciplinary project environment, and with other departments.

Events like StackTech regularly bring together technologists from across the country.

Government also recognises the diversity challenge in the technology industry and are strongly committed to empowering change. Flexibility, part-time and job share arrangements are available on every role.

Louise Ryan explains: “I was first drawn to GDS because I saw them as a place where 'they do stuff right' and that is very attractive. By 'stuff', I mean everything from design and accessibility, right through to being cloud first and embracing the latest DevOps approaches.

Secondly, work on projects that affect everybody’s life. If you can make digital services reliable, easy to use and take advantage of the latest tech, you can make a lot of people's lives easier. That's very cool”.

Our technologies

Each department has their own technology stack but our technical architects share a deep understanding of agile delivery methods, knowledge of open source technologies and they are constantly challenging the status quo.

Jenny Duckett says: “One of the aspects of the technical architect role that I love is the chance to work on a wide range of different things. You could be working with one team in depth on their technical stack, or across several teams, or leading on strategy in a particular area, as well as being part of a supportive cross-government community and helping other departments learn from each other to improve their services. It's a licence to get involved in whatever interests you!”

The UK is already recognised as a world leader in digital government. But we need more brilliant minds to take the essential work of departments like BEIS, DfID, DIT, Land Registry, Highways England and GDS to the next stage and make public services better for everyone.
